Can you lose money in an index fund?

Yes. Index funds are investments, not guaranteed savings products. If the market or asset class tracked by the fund declines, the fund’s value can decline as well. Diversification can reduce the impact of a single investment performing poorly, but it cannot eliminate market risk.
