Why do some brokers recommend expensive investment products?
There are many reasons a financial professional might recommend a particular product, including its investment strategy, the services attached to it, or the firm’s investment philosophy. However, some compensation arrangements can create incentives to recommend products that generate more revenue for the firm or professional.
That is why investors should ask how a financial professional is compensated and what additional benefit they receive from choosing a higher-cost product. A higher fee can be justified when it provides meaningful additional value, but investors should never assume that higher cost automatically means higher returns or better investment management.
